Rômulo Fritscher

Rômulo Fritscher was a Brazilian artist of rare breadth — photographer,
filmmaker, writer, actor, musician and poet. He began photographing
as a child in the 1960s, and spent five decades building one of the
most diverse creative careers in Brazilian cultural life.

As a cinematographer, he worked alongside Renato Aragão, Fábio
Barreto and Gustavo Dahl, and served as director of photography on
Itaipu — A Pedra que Canta, a documentary seen by over 5.5 million
people and awarded the Silver Medal at the New York Film Festival.
His video work earned the Grand Prize at the Festival de Santo André
and selections at VideoBrasil and the Rio Cine Festival. His final
photographic work graced the cover of the Paralamas do Sucesso DVD
Hoje, released in 2006.

As a poet, his contribution to the cultural life of Rio de Janeiro
was recognized with the title of Honorary Citizen of the city.

Argentinidad — his final major photographic exhibition — was born
from a 12-day journey through Argentina in July 2005, made with
his son Francisco. The series was exhibited at the Instituto ArteClara
gallery in Rio de Janeiro and at Universidade Salgado de Oliveira
in Niterói, to critical and public acclaim.

Rômulo Fritscher passed away in February 2010. His archive is
preserved and represented by Fritscher Gallery.
